A U.S.-registered cruise ship, MV Odyssey, has suspended its around-the-world voyage in Southeast Asia, leaving approximately 200 passengers stranded at the port of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The suspension, announced in late October 2026, is a direct result of escalating fuel prices that the operator deemed unsustainable.

Ship Capacity and Voyage Details

The MV Odyssey carries 203 passengers, primarily Americans, alongside a crew of 156 members, despite having a capacity for 650 people. The cruise, managed by Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, commenced in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024, and was originally planned as a 3 1/2 year global journey combining extended living aboard with worldwide travel.

Fuel Cost Surge Linked to Geopolitical Conflict

Fuel prices increased sharply due to disruptions in petroleum supplies caused by the ongoing war in Iran, affecting the Strait of Hormuz – a critical global shipping lane. This geopolitical conflict has tightened fuel availability in Southeast Asia, pushing monthly fuel expenses per cabin from a historical average of $1,800 to an estimated $6,000-$8,000.

Operator Statement on Financial Impact and Mitigation Efforts

Villa Vie Residences stated it has been unable to sustain the operating losses caused by the fuel price surge. Efforts to lower fuel consumption by slowing the itinerary and spending extended periods docked in ports did not sufficiently reduce expenses. The operator said passing the full

fuel cost increase on to residents was “not a realistic solution” and emphasized its focus on supporting passengers and crew while coordinating disembarkation and temporary housing.

Passenger Stranding and Limited Assistance

Passengers are stranded in Sihanoukville with restricted freedom to leave the port. Randy Cassingham, a passenger and blogger, criticized the company’s handling, noting that passengers “couldn’t even walk out of the port,” and shuttle buses dropped them in the city center without hotel lists or assistance securing accommodations. Villa Vie Residences has acknowledged working with residents to manage disembarkation and temporary living arrangements but has not provided immediate solutions.

Official Updates on Ship Departure

Long Dimanche, deputy governor of

Preah Sihanouk province, reported that the MV Odyssey arrived at Sihanoukville port last Friday relative to the late October 2026 report. The ship was originally scheduled to depart the following Wednesday but is now expected to refuel and leave Cambodia on Saturday, although the operator has not publicly confirmed this date.

MV Odyssey History and Precedents at Sihanoukville

The MV Odyssey, built in 1993 and acquired by Villa Vie Residences in 2023, has operated under various names with different cruise lines before the current voyage. Sihanoukville has previously hosted cruise ships in crisis, such as the MS Westerdam in February 2020, which was allowed to dock for

humanitarian reasons during the COVID-19 outbreak after being denied entry at multiple ports. That ship carried 1,455 passengers, including over 600 Americans.

Regional Fuel Supply Challenges and Impact

The current stranding occurs amid a broader context of tightened petroleum supplies in Southeast Asia due to geopolitical tensions related to the Iran war. These conditions have contributed significantly to soaring operational costs for maritime vessels, notably cruise ships like the MV Odyssey engaged in extended global itineraries.
