Viking Cruises has announced the names of its next two ocean cruise ships, Viking Leda and Viking Vega, currently being built at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Italy. Each vessel will accommodate 998 passengers as part of one of the industry’s largest ongoing fleet expansions.
Both ships will weigh approximately 47,000 tonnes and follow the design principles of Viking Star, Viking’s first purpose-built ocean ship launched in 2015. This approach maintains consistent ship size and layout across the ocean fleet, allowing the company to standardize its onboard experience while increasing deployment capacity.
Service Entry and Deployment
Viking Leda is scheduled to enter service in December 2028,
commencing operations with a winter Mediterranean season. Itineraries will range from eight to 16 days, covering the Aegean Sea, wider Mediterranean, and Atlantic Ocean regions. Ports of call will include the Greek Islands, the French Riviera, and Morocco, departing from Greece, Italy, and Spain.
Viking Vega is slated to begin service in June 2029, initially navigating Southern Europe. By mid-July 2029, the ship will reposition to the British Isles region. Its inaugural season will feature departures from Italy, Spain, Norway, and the United Kingdom, with embarkation ports such as Civitavecchia, Barcelona, and Bergen.
Broader Fleet Expansion Plans
Prior to the launch of Viking Leda
and Viking Vega, Viking Cruises will receive three other ships between 2026 and 2028: Viking Libra, Viking Astrea, and Viking Lyra. Viking Astrea and Viking Lyra are set to become the industry’s first hydrogen-powered ocean vessels.
The company’s orderbook also includes nine additional cruise ships scheduled for delivery through 2031. Viking plans to further expand its expedition fleet with two new expedition ships planned for entrance into service in 2030 and 2031.
Standardized Ship Design Strategy
Maintaining ship size and onboard layout similarity across its ocean vessels enables Viking Cruises to streamline operations and deliver a consistent guest experience across different deployments. The continuation
of this design approach with Viking Leda and Viking Vega underlines the company’s long-term strategy for scalable growth within the ocean cruise market.
