Vietjet will begin operating flights between Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) and Ho Chi Minh City starting January 2027, initially offering two weekly services using Airbus A330 aircraft with 377 seats each. From March 2027, the frequency will increase to three weekly flights.
Vietjet Thailand, the airline’s sister carrier, plans to commence four weekly flights from WSI to Bangkok in November 2027, pending regulatory approval.
With Vietjet’s commitment, WSI airport now has five airlines confirmed: Vietjet, Jetstar, Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines. Fiji Airways has also tentatively added a route to Nadi from WSI starting June next year,
but official confirmation is still pending.
The announcement of Vietjet’s new Ho Chi Minh City service coincided with the arrival of Vietnam President To Lam in Sydney. WSI airport is 76 days away from opening for passenger flights as of August 2026.
The NSW Government supports the new Vietjet route via its Take-Off Fund. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “Western Sydney deserves an airport with global connections, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering.” Albanese added that the flights would strengthen ties between Australia and Vietnam, boost tourism and trade, and create opportunities for the Western Sydney region.
Federal Minister for
Infrastructure Catherine King described the announcement as “a sign of the momentum we’re seeing build at Sydney’s newest airport,” noting the airport terminal is undergoing testing, fit-out, and final preparations ahead of opening.
NSW Tourism Minister Steve Kamper stated, “With the new airport getting closer to opening for passenger flights, this is an incredibly exciting time for local tourism, businesses and jobs.”
Vietjet began flying to Australia in 2023 with initial services to Melbourne. The carrier has since expanded its Australian network, making the Ho Chi Minh City route its fifth destination in the country. Vietnam has experienced significant growth as an Australian travel destination, with consistent double-digit increases in Australian visitors. Vietjet employs competitive low-cost strategies such as Double Day sales to attract Australian travelers.
