The Intercity 125 High-Speed Train (HST) first entered service in 1976, setting a new standard for rail travel in the UK with speeds up to 125mph. This diesel-powered train was British Rail’s answer to growing competition from car travel, particularly targeting business passengers. The train’s introduction marked Britain’s leap into high-speed rail, offering journeys 25% faster than existing services.

Commemorative Journey from London to South Wales

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Intercity 125, a commemorative train journey is scheduled for the first Sunday in October 2026. The preserved train will run on the historic route from London Paddington through Bristol to South Wales. By early

September, approximately 75% of seats for this special service had already been sold. The event is organized by the 125 Group, which maintains the preserved train set. Gary Heelas from the 125 Group, based in Woodley, Berkshire, said, “We’re basically retracing the steps on that very first day.”

Preservation and Maintenance of the Iconic Trains

The preserved Intercity 125 train set includes five power cars and nine coaches, all based at Buckley Wells, the same location where the Flying Scotsman locomotive was restored a decade ago. Preservation efforts started in the 1990s when the trains began to be phased out. Although modernized versions of the Intercity 125

remain operational in Scotland, many have been retired from UK service and some units were exported to countries such as Mexico and Nigeria. Engineer James Treblinski emphasized the ongoing need for maintenance, stating, “The mileage that the HST Group 125’s do is far less than they used to do day-in, day-out, but they still need the care and attention to be able to do 125mph on the mainline, as they were designed to.”

Significance and Appeal of the Intercity 125

Gary Heelas described the Intercity 125 as “one of the last great things that British Rail designed and built” and credited the train for providing “probably the

most comfortable ride passengers have had then or now.” Volunteer Roger Senior, who has worked extensively with high-speed trains, summarized the train’s allure by citing its “speed, comfort, air conditioning and just the shape. You knew it was a winner.”

Cultural Impact and Media Presence

The Intercity 125 was a style icon during its heyday and regularly featured in British Rail advertising campaigns with slogans like “this is the age of the train.” It famously appeared in television adverts comparing its speed unfavorably to cars, including one featuring a locomotive painted as a police car alongside the train, highlighting that rail travel avoided the risk

of speeding tickets. Launched the same year as Concorde, the Intercity 125 helped define an era of faster and more stylish travel in the UK.
