Royal Caribbean announced in early October 2026 that “The SpongeBob Musical” will be the main theatrical production on its upcoming fourth Icon-class ship, Hero of the Seas. The ship will begin sailing from Miami in August 2027, offering this entertainment onboard.

Broadway Musical Adapted for Sea

“The SpongeBob Musical,” adapted from the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, will be performed in the Royal Theater aboard Hero of the Seas. The production features larger-than-life characters and original songs, bringing the story of Bikini Bottom to life for cruise guests.

Christi Coachman, Royal Caribbean’s vice president of entertainment, highlighted the musical’s aim to connect multiple generations through a

familiar story presented with world-class production and advanced technology within the cruise theater environment.

Ship Size, Features, and Construction

Hero of the Seas is tied as the world’s largest cruise ship alongside its sister Icon-class vessels. The ship includes eight neighborhoods, nine pools, six waterslides, the FlowRider surf simulator, and 28 dining venues. It also introduces new accommodations for passengers.

The vessel reached a construction stage milestone with its float out at Meyer Turku Shipyard in September 2026. Following outfitting, the ship will undergo sea trials before Royal Caribbean takes delivery next year.

Entertainment Strategy and Booking

Other Icon-class vessels feature Broadway-style headliners: Icon of the Seas has “The

Wizard of Oz,” Star of the Seas presents “Back to the Future: The Musical,” and Legend of the Seas stages “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Royal Caribbean’s strategy targets family-friendly productions that appeal to diverse age groups.

Seven-night itineraries on Hero of the Seas for Eastern and Western Caribbean routes are open for booking from summer 2027 through spring 2028.
