Royal Caribbean revealed that The SpongeBob Musical will be the main theatrical production on its new cruise ship Hero of the Seas, which is scheduled to begin sailing from Miami in August 2027. The Hero of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s fourth vessel in its Icon-class series.
Hero of the Seas Features and Entertainment
The SpongeBob Musical is adapted and reimagined for the Royal Theater onboard Hero of the Seas, bringing the nautical story inspired by the Tony Award-winning Broadway production to life at sea. This continues Royal Caribbean’s trend of hosting well-known Broadway-style and film-based shows on its Icon-class ships, with previous installations including The Wizard
of Oz on Icon of the Seas and Back to the Future: The Musical on Star of the Seas.
Hero of the Seas, tied as one of the world’s largest cruise ships, offers guests access to eight distinct neighborhoods, nine pools, six waterslides, the FlowRider surf simulator, 28 dining venues, and new accommodations, enhancing the onboard experience.
Royal Caribbean’s Entertainment Vision and Construction Update
Christi Coachman, Royal Caribbean’s vice president of entertainment, said the company aims to craft memorable experiences that unite families across generations. Coachman emphasized that The SpongeBob Musical connects families through a story loved by many, coupled with innovative production and technology unique to
Royal Caribbean voyages.
Hero of the Seas recently reached a significant milestone when it was floated out at the Meyer Turku Shipyard in Finland. The ship will continue its outfitting at the shipyard’s pier before proceeding to sea trials and delivery to Royal Caribbean.
