Train services between Rome and Florence will be suspended on the segment between Chiusi and Orvieto from August 10 to August 28, 2026, as part of scheduled maintenance and renovation works. The disruptions affect both the high-speed Direttissima line and the conventional Florence-Rome line, with maintenance concentrated during the summer to reduce commuter impact.
Maintenance Investment, Work Sites, and Staffing
The maintenance program has a total investment of approximately €6 million, with around €5 million allocated for the Direttissima section between Chiusi and Orvieto and €1 million dedicated to the conventional line. Key construction areas on the Direttissima include the Fabro tunnel and Paglia viaduct near
Orvieto. On the conventional line, work focuses on the Riomaggiore railway bridge and the second shelter at Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station. More than 80 technicians will be engaged daily on the Direttissima sites, supported by construction trains and vehicles, while over 30 technicians will work on the conventional line.
Impact on Train Services and Passenger Travel
High Speed, Intercity, and Regional train services on the Rome-Florence route will be either suspended or rescheduled during the maintenance period. Travelers will encounter changes including revised timetables, altered connections, and longer journey times until August 31. Railway companies have already updated their sales systems to reflect these schedule adjustments.
Restoration Phase and Residual Delays
The restoration
phase will run from August 29 to 31, during which trains will operate at reduced speeds as speed limits are gradually lifted following technical inspections. Travel times are expected to remain extended by 5 to 10 minutes after August 28, with full service normalization awaiting completion of safety and technical checks.

Parallel Maintenance on Milan-Bologna High-Speed Line
Additional maintenance work is planned on the Milan-Bologna high-speed line from August 10 to 17, with related changes to the high-speed network circulation during this period. The Rome-Florence maintenance closure represents the final major summer intervention on this route in 2026.
