Riviera Travel has cancelled 10 European river cruise departures and modified six others due to exceptionally low water levels restricting navigation on sections of the Rhine, Danube, Moselle, and Main rivers. The cancellations were announced on 12 August 2026 based on the assessment that no viable alternative itineraries could operate on affected routes.
Riviera Travel Operational Response to Disruptions
To manage the ongoing disruptions, Riviera Travel has established a dedicated incident team and deployed additional cruise directors and head-office staff onboard affected vessels. The company has increased call-center capacity and improved coordination with travel-agent partners. Passengers on impacted cruises receive updates approximately 14 days, 7 days,

Passenger Options for Cancelled and Modified Cruises
Affected passengers can choose to transfer their booking to another Riviera holiday in 2026 or 2027, opt for a full refund, or select an alternative river cruise on the Douro, Seine, or Rhône rivers. Riviera also offers European and worldwide escorted tours as substitution options. The company recommends considering later departure dates for Rhine, Danube, or Moselle cruises owing to ongoing water level uncertainty.
If an alternative holiday is less expensive than the original, Riviera refunds the price difference. For costlier replacements, the company
contributes GBP 250 per person toward the additional expense. Passengers who take refunds receive a 15% Welcome Home Offer valid for six months on future European river cruises in 2026 or 2027, increased from the standard 10%. For voyages requiring mid-cruise alterations, Riviera will assess compensation or goodwill arrangements after each sailing’s completion.
Navigation Challenges and Impact on Commercial Shipping
Weeks of high temperatures and limited rainfall across parts of Europe have produced extremely low water levels, severely restricting navigation on several commercially important river stretches. The Kaub section of the Rhine river in Germany is identified as a particularly critical point for navigation under present conditions.
These low levels have also caused significant limitations for commercial shipping operations along the Rhine.
Passenger Feedback During Affected Cruises
Post-cruise surveys from July Rhine and Danube departures indicated an average passenger trust score of 8.6 out of 10 and a positive sentiment rate approaching 88%. Riviera Travel cited these results as evidence of effective operational management amid the disruptions.
