A man went overboard from the Ambassador Cruise Lines ship MS Ambition about 36 nautical miles from Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland at 08:35 on Friday, 21 August 2026.
Search efforts involved multiple agencies including Police Scotland, coastguard aircraft from Prestwick and Carlisle, a commercial search and rescue helicopter, lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, and coastguard teams in Dundee, Arbroath, and St Andrews. The man’s body was recovered later the same day following this coordinated operation.
Police Scotland confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious. The identity of the man has not been
disclosed, but his next of kin have been informed.
At the time, MS Ambition was on the return leg of a solar eclipse cruise with previous stops in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The vessel docked in Lerwick before heading back to its home port in Dundee on Friday. Shortly after 18:00 that day, the ship departed Dundee bound for Newcastle.
The incident emphasizes the importance of passenger awareness regarding safety on cruises operating along the Scottish coastline.
