Meghalaya Tourism Grows to Nearly 18 Lakh Arrivals in 2026

Meghalaya’s annual tourist arrivals increased from around 12 lakh in 2018 to nearly 18 lakh in 2026, establishing tourism as a key source of livelihood in the state, according to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

Addressing the public on 15 August 2026 at Polo Grounds in Shillong, CM Sangma emphasized the significance of tourism in Meghalaya’s economic landscape, noting the sector’s growing contribution to employment and income.

Expansion of the Homestay Economy

The homestay economy in Meghalaya is expanding, generating new opportunities for local entrepreneurs and communities. This growth aligns with efforts to diversify the state’s economy by promoting community-based tourism ventures.

This development supports the

Vision 2032 plan, which includes the promotion of tourism and homestay initiatives as part of Meghalaya’s broader economic development strategy.

Government Support for Small Coal Miners

Alongside tourism development, the Meghalaya government is formulating policies to support small coal miners, aiming to address livelihood concerns within the sector. CM Sangma highlighted that these measures are intended to provide economic assistance to this group.

Independence Day Address and Vision 2032

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma delivered these updates during the 80th Independence Day event in Shillong. The address linked tourism and community initiatives to the state’s long-term Vision 2032 framework, emphasizing sustainable development across economic sectors.
