More than 10,000 delegates from 40 countries gathered at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi from October 6 to 8, 2026, for the 16th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE). This attendance represented a 30 percent rise over the 7,691 delegates recorded at MKTE 2025, making it the largest turnout since the event’s inception.
The three-day expo featured over 400 exhibitors and more than 250 quality-vetted international buyers. MKTE remains East Africa’s leading travel trade event and supports Kenya’s target to attract five million international visitors by the end of 2027.
Expo Theme Highlights Digital Innovation
The 2026 MKTE was held under the theme “Digital
Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” aligning with the global focus of World Tourism Day 2026. The event convened government agencies, tourism boards, industry players, and technology partners to explore AI, big data, immersive technologies, digital payments, and smart destination tools aimed at improving visitor experience and competitive positioning of tourism destinations.
Focus on MICE Sector Development
Special emphasis was placed on Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector. The Kenya MICE Club organized sessions to promote Kenya as a competitive destination for international business events. Kenya MICE Association Chair Duncan Muriuki stated, “MICE is the next frontier for growing tourism
revenue. Our focus is not just on increasing visitor numbers, but on attracting high-value business events that deliver greater economic impact.” The club is developing competitive bidding packages, including destination incentives, through public-private collaboration.
Government Reforms Facilitate Travel
Tour Operators Society of Kenya Chair Raymond Cheruiyot welcomed government reforms easing visa access and expanding air connectivity, which underpin Kenya’s appeal to international travelers. Kenya’s modern facilities in Nairobi and Mombasa and strong bleisure tourism offerings aim to extend visitor stays and enhance overall destination competitiveness.
Strategic Direction Backed by Data and Partnerships
Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei highlighted that all aspects of MKTE 2026, from buyer selection to seminar content,
are informed by data and consumer trends. She said, “Every element of this year’s MKTE programme, from the buyer selection to the seminar agenda, is informed by data and consumer demand intelligence,” and added, “We know what the interests of our visitors are and what it takes to convert interest into arrivals. Our marketing campaigns both domestic and international are built on that evidence, and MKTE is the platform where we bring those insights to life for our partners.” Chepkemei stated the expo demonstrates Kenya’s commitment to driving tourism growth through innovation, technology and strategic partnerships.
The expo included seminars,
business-to-business meetings, and familiarisation trips aimed at strengthening partnerships and generating trade opportunities, supporting Kenya’s goal to reach five million international visitors by the end of 2027.
