On July 28, 2026, Luna Rail and Reissujuna formed a strategic partnership to create next-generation night train services in Finland connecting Helsinki and Lapland. Luna Rail, a Berlin-based startup founded in 2023 by Anton Dubrau and Hendrik Lucka, will lead the interior design for this project. Reissujuna is operated by Suomen Elämysjunat and currently specializes in themed and event-driven passenger journeys as well as steam excursions.
Central to the partnership is Luna Rail’s patent-pending flexible cabin concept, which enables train vehicles to operate as premium inter-city coaches by day and transform into overnight sleeping accommodations by night. The design emphasizes
maximizing passenger capacity, individual comfort, and privacy for both day and night travel. Luna Rail developed full-scale cabin mock-ups that were tested by hundreds of users. The company is also developing an app to facilitate booking, ticket validation, cabin door access, travel information, and onboard food orders.
Reissujuna has acquired a small fleet of used sleeper and seated coaches to be extensively refurbished for this initiative. The service will run between Helsinki and northern Finland’s Lapland region, addressing a winter demand peak where existing overnight trains frequently sell out months ahead. Reissujuna’s parent company expanded its fleet by purchasing steam
train operator Höyryraide Oy in January 2026, increasing total assets to 25 coaches and 4 locomotives.
Traficom, the Finnish transport safety authority, revoked Höyryraide Oy’s safety certificate in spring 2026. Reissujuna is currently applying for a new safety certificate to regain operational rights, introducing regulatory uncertainty around service launch timing. The details of the partnership’s financial arrangements and passenger service rollout dates remain undisclosed.
According to industry leaders, Lapland is one of Europe’s fastest-growing tourist regions, making it well-suited for next-generation overnight rail travel. Reissujuna is actively seeking strategic and financial investors to support this growth strategy, which integrates sustainable
travel with tourism development. Luna Rail sees this collaboration as its first commercial project and aims to play a key role in revitalizing night train travel across Europe by better linking Nordic countries with the continent’s expanding overnight rail network.
