A recently discovered sinkhole at LaGuardia Airport has resulted in the closure of one of the airport’s runways. This infrastructure issue has directly impacted airport operations, prompting a significant reduction in flight activity at the facility.

In response to the runway closure, several major U.S. airlines—namely Delta Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue—have canceled hundreds of flights. This sudden decrease in available flight options has affected not only LaGuardia but also contributed to congestion and operational backups at other key regional airports, including JFK Airport in New York and Newark Airport in New Jersey.

These disruptions have been particularly

impactful during the busy Memorial Day travel period. Affected travelers include international passengers from countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, and China, many of whom have experienced delays and cancellations across the New York metropolitan area airport network.
