Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, India, initiated biometric trials for international departures using the Digi Yatra platform shortly before October 30, 2026. The system employs facial recognition technology combined with secure digital credentials to conduct contactless identity verification for eligible passengers.
Trial Participation and Scope
Passengers taking part in the trial must validate their identity via their e-passport chip with the Digi Yatra App and complete a photo verification process prior to use. Verified passengers receive a privacy-preserving digital travel credential to access designated touchpoints. The trial currently covers terminal entry and security checkpoints with prospective extension to boarding for select IndiGo and Air
India international flights.
Documentation and Operational Context
Standard immigration, emigration, and mandatory physical document checks remain in effect alongside the biometric process. Digi Yatra already supports over 26.5 million domestic users, now extending these biometric capabilities to international departures.
Development and Industry Collaboration
The launch follows a technical Proof of Concept completed earlier in 2026 at the airport involving IATA, SITA, and other industry players. Government authorities, Digi Yatra platform operators, SITA, IndiGo, and Air India collaborated on the development and implementation of the trial at Kempegowda International Airport.
Official Statements and Relevance
George Fanthome, CTO at Bangalore International Airport Limited, described the pilot as a key advancement toward more efficient and
digitally integrated travel processes for international passengers. The trial aligns with themes discussed at Identity Week Europe by demonstrating the use of biometric and digital credential technologies within Indian aviation.
Passenger Experience and Limitations
Travellers using the system can experience contactless, face-enabled identity verification at terminal access points and security gates during these trials. Airport officials underscored that Digi Yatra does not replace required immigration procedures or the need for physical travel documents, which remain mandatory for airline counter verification.
