Jinmao Group officially terminated its partnership with Hyatt Group in early August 2026. The Hyatt Regency Chongming Shanghai Jinmao hotel, which opened in 2014 on Chongming Island, Shanghai, was renamed Shanghai Chongming Jinmao Yiyin Hotel and is now operated independently by Jinmao Group.

History of Jinmao’s Cooperation with International Brands

Jinmao Group’s hotel operations began through collaboration with international brands like Hyatt. In 2007, Jinmao entered the high-end hotel market with the opening of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Jinmao Tower, Lujiazui, Shanghai. This project established Jinmao’s presence in the domestic luxury business hotel sector by leveraging Hyatt’s brand influence and management expertise.

Jinmao opened in 2014 as a resort property, benefiting from its location on Chongming Island and Hyatts’ established brand systems, attracting weekday occupancy above 50%. Jinmao sustained a stable customer base during its cooperation with Hyatt, especially in family vacations and corporate team-building across the Yangtze River Delta.

Development of Jinmao’s Own Hotel Brands

Starting around 2021, Jinmao initiated a strategic transformation to reduce reliance on international brands and develop its own hotel brand matrix. The company has since launched multiple proprietary brands: Jinmao Yiyin, Jinmao Joy, and Jinmao Pure.

Jinmao Yiyin focuses on resort and natural-resource-oriented hotels, including the rebranded Shanghai Chongming Jinmao Yiyin Hotel

and Taicang Jinmao Yiyin Rose Manor. Jinmao Joy targets urban business and multi-use complex hotels, operating in cities such as Ningbo and Jiangyin, where the Ningbo Jinmao Joy hotel maintains an average room rate near 700 yuan with occupancy rates above 60%.

Jinmao Pure serves the high-end boutique travel market with projects like the Lijiang Jinmao Pure Snow Mountain Hotel. This property transitioned from initial cooperation with Hyatt brands to Jinmao’s self-owned Pure brand, emphasizing immersive travel experiences utilizing local natural and cultural assets.

Economic and Operational Rationale for Independent Operation

The decision for independent operation is driven by economic factors and market conditions. The oversupply of

high-end hotels in China has diminished the traffic benefits that international brands previously brought. According to Jinmao Group, “the halo effect that international brands bring with their own traffic is weakening. In addition, the annual fixed brand management fee is changing from a value-added service to a rigid cost.” This reduces cost-effectiveness and incentivizes controlling brand management internally.

New Management Approach and Market Positioning

Jinmao has established a commercial management platform responsible for its own brand standards, operational systems, and membership programs. This enables Jinmao to tailor its product design and operational decisions to asset types and local conditions, differentiating from the standardized global approaches of

international brands.

The rebranding of the former Hyatt Regency Chongming Shanghai as Shanghai Chongming Jinmao Yiyin Hotel reflects a shift from reliance on Hyatt’s operational support to full independent management by Jinmao. This transition focuses on combining the hotel’s natural surroundings and consumer needs to develop low-density, quiet luxury resort products.

Jinmao’s strategic brand matrix aims to match diverse market segments: urban business travelers through Jinmao Joy, resort and wellness segments via Jinmao Yiyin, and high-end boutique travelers with Jinmao Pure. These brands emphasize local cultural and natural resources to reduce homogeneous competition common in internationally standardized hotels.

Through over

20 years of cooperation with international hotel groups, Jinmao has developed operational expertise, formed professional teams, and gained the capability for independent operation. The rebranding and resumption of independent operations mark a shift from Jinmao as a hotel asset holder to a fully capable hotel brand operator in China’s evolving hospitality market.
