Groundforce staff at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) in Catalonia, Spain, have been on strike since August 4, 2026. Nearly 1,200 employees working in check-in, boarding, baggage, and ramp operations initiated the walkout, citing unsafe working conditions and insufficient staffing as the causes.
Within the first five days of the strike, at least 50 flights were canceled, and over 1,500 pieces of luggage remained stranded at BCN. To reduce travel disruptions, Spain’s Ministry of Transport imposed mandatory minimum service levels requiring Groundforce to maintain between 35% and 80% of normal operations depending on the route. Despite this, flight delays,
cancellations, and baggage handling problems have persisted.
Impact on Airlines and Passengers
Groundforce provides ground operations for 20 major international airlines, including United Airlines, Air France–KLM, Lufthansa, and Qatar Airways. In response to the ongoing strike, United Airlines has implemented a flexible travel waiver for passengers booked through Barcelona Airport, allowing fee-free ticket changes and waiving fare differences at least through August 10, 2026.
Barcelona Airport is the primary international hub for the Catalonia region and the second busiest in Spain after Madrid–Barajas, handling more than 50 million passengers annually. The strike’s impact on flight schedules and baggage delivery continues to disrupt travel at this
key gateway.
