Severe thunderstorms hit London Heathrow and Gatwick airports on June 28, 2026, prompting major flight cancellations and delays. The extreme weather brought an abrupt end to the UK’s recent heatwave and caused significant disruption at two of the capital’s busiest airports.

Combined, the two airports experienced disruptions affecting more than 900 flights, leading to around 40,000 passengers being stranded. These interruptions ranged across a wide number of departures and arrivals throughout the day.

Flight cancellations and delays persisted for several hours on June 28 as the weather continued to impact airport operations. The thunderstorms triggered widespread travel chaos across UK

airports, with recovery efforts ongoing as conditions stabilized.
