A trackside fire next to the railway near Clapham Junction on Sunday afternoon, 27 September 2026, caused significant damage to signalling equipment affecting the route between Clapham Junction and London Victoria. The fire led to widespread disruption across multiple rail services in and out of London Victoria and its surrounding areas.
Train operations for Southern, Gatwick Express, and Thameslink on the affected route have faced cancellations, delays of up to 60 minutes, diversions, or service revisions. Southern and Gatwick Express services between London Victoria and Brighton, Gatwick Airport, and other destinations experienced particular disruption. Around 20 train routes were cancelled
between 10:30am and 1pm on Monday, 28 September. Train services between Streatham and Tulse Hill have continued at reduced speeds due to related signalling faults.
Emergency engineering repairs began overnight after the fire and were ongoing throughout Monday, delaying the restoration of normal service. Southern Rail announced that regular service between London Victoria and Eastbourne/Ore would resume from 4:24pm on Monday. National Rail confirmed disruption is expected until at least 4pm Monday afternoon, advising passengers to allow an extra 60 minutes for their journeys.
The fire’s impact extended to passengers, who faced cancellations and delays and were advised to seek
alternative routes. Gatwick Express and Southern ticket holders were permitted to use alternative London Underground and London Overground services without additional cost. In addition, London Buses, C2C rail, and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) accepted valid tickets for travel on reasonable alternative routes.
National Rail and Southern-Gatwick Express issued statements detailing the incident: “On Sunday, 27 September, there was a fire next to the track in the Clapham Junction area. The fire caused damage to the signalling equipment on the route and repairs are ongoing. As a result, trains between Clapham Junction and London Victoria may be cancelled, delayed by up
to 60 minutes, diverted or revised.”
Additional disruption affected London Underground lines, with severe delays on the District line between Tower Hill and Upminster due to an earlier fire alert at Plaistow. The Victoria line suffered severe delays owing to a signal failure at Brixton. The Northern line was partly suspended between Edgware and Camden Town following a medical emergency onboard a train. Other lines, including the London Overground and South Western Railway, continued operating normally.
