A trackside fire near Clapham Junction on Sunday, 27 September 2026, damaged signalling equipment and caused major disruption on rail services into London Victoria station on Monday.
Southern and Gatwick Express Services Severely Affected
Southern and Gatwick Express trains operating between Clapham Junction and London Victoria faced cancellations, delays of up to 60 minutes, diversions, or revised schedules. Gatwick Express services between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport, and Brighton were suspended. Southern services were impacted on routes including Sutton, East Croydon, Selhurst, and London Bridge, with Thameslink trains between Sutton and destinations such as Kentish Town, West Hampstead Thameslink, St Albans City, and Luton also disrupted.
Between 10:30
AM and 1 PM on Monday, 20 routes were cancelled due to ongoing repair work. An extremely reduced service operated into London Victoria until at least 2 PM, with delays and cancellations expected throughout the day.
London Underground Delays and Alternative Ticket Acceptance
London Underground experienced delays on multiple lines. Severe delays affected the Victoria Line due to a track fault at Brixton. The District Line had severe delays between Tower Hill and Upminster caused by an earlier fire alert at Plaistow. The Northern Line was partially suspended between Edgware and Camden Town due to a passenger medical emergency. Minor delays were also reported on the Circle
and Northern lines.
To assist passengers, London Buses, C2C, and the DLR accepted valid tickets on any reasonable route. Southern and Gatwick Express ticket holders were permitted to use London Underground and London Overground services at no additional cost. Customers were advised to use alternative London terminals and allow extra travel time.
Ongoing Repairs and Service Restoration
Emergency engineering repairs began immediately after the fire on Sunday and continued throughout Monday morning and into the night. National Rail reported disruption would persist until at least 4 PM on Monday. Southern Rail announced that normal service between London Victoria and Eastbourne/Ore would resume from 4:24 PM
on 28 September 2026.
National Rail stated: “On Sunday, 27 September, there was a fire next to the track in the Clapham Junction area. The fire caused damage to the signalling equipment on the route and repairs are ongoing. As a result, trains between Clapham Junction and London Victoria may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes, diverted or revised.”
Passenger Impact and Travel Advisories
Passengers travelling through London Victoria station faced cancellations, delays of up to one hour, diversions, or revised timetables until at least 4 PM on 28 September. Services on routes connecting to Gatwick Airport, Brighton, Bognor Regis, and Ore were
particularly affected. Passengers were encouraged to plan for additional journey time and to seek alternative terminals and routes where possible.
The signalling faults also caused slower running speeds between Streatham and Tulse Hill. Thameslink and Southern services between these locations were subject to delays and alterations.
