FAA Lifts Thunderstorm-Driven Ground Stop at Detroit Metro Airport

Detroit Metro Airport Ground Stop Lifted Following Thunderstorms

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed and later lifted a ground stop at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The ground stop began late morning and extended into early afternoon, halting flights destined for Detroit Metro Airport from the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, Southeast regions, and Toronto, Canada.

Weather Conditions, Power Outages, and Local Road Closure

The National Weather Service reported that a cold front sweeping through Southeast Michigan caused widespread showers and thunderstorms during Saturday afternoon and evening. Isolated thunderstorms reached near-severe intensity with wind gusts close to 60 mph.

As of 3:10 p.m., DTE Energy logged power outages affecting over 2,500 customers in

Southeast Michigan. In Plymouth, Michigan, a utility pole fire at the intersection of Ann Arbor and Lilley roads prompted city officials to close the roads and advise motorists to seek alternate routes. Video showed a transformer exploding at the site, correlating with the severe weather impacts in the area.
