The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop at Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus, Michigan, on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The halt affected incoming flights from the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast regions of the United States, as well as Toronto, Canada. The restriction was in place late Saturday morning and early afternoon before flights were allowed to resume.

Weather Conditions and Local Disruptions

The National Weather Service forecast widespread showers and thunderstorms in Southeast Michigan throughout Saturday afternoon and night, with an isolated thunderstorm potentially reaching severe intensity and wind gusts close to 60 mph. The cold front moving through the region was linked

to these conditions.

At 3:10 p.m., DTE Energy reported that over 2,500 people in Southeast Michigan experienced power outages related to the storm activity. In Plymouth, Michigan, the intersection of Ann Arbor and Lilley roads was closed Saturday afternoon due to a utility pole fire. City officials urged motorists to use alternate routes. Video obtained showed a transformer exploding near the fire, contributing to the disruption.
