On July 16, 2026, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) delayed approximately 4,000 flights and cancelled more than 500 at major New York-area airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport.

The FAA attributed the delays and cancellations to adverse weather conditions and air traffic control staffing shortages at the facility managing flights to these airports. Both factors have significantly impacted the ability to handle the volume of air traffic.

FAA Air Traffic Control Measures and Their Impact

To manage congestion, the FAA implemented ground stops and ground delays intermittently throughout the evening of July 16. Ground stops hold

flights at their origin airports until lifted, preventing departure to the affected airports. Ground delays allow departures but assign specific takeoff times to space out aircraft and reduce in-air congestion at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Philadelphia International airports.
