More than 500 flights were cancelled and over 4,000 delayed into New York area airports on July 16 and 17, 2026. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented restrictions affecting arrivals at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport.

Flight Restrictions at JFK, Newark, LaGuardia, and Philadelphia

The FAA imposed ground stops and ground delays intermittently during the evening of July 16. Ground stops required some or all flights destined for these airports to remain at their points of origin until the restrictions were lifted. Ground delays allowed flights to depart but assigned specific takeoff times to manage air traffic spacing

and reduce airborne holding patterns.

Reasons Behind Flight Delays and Cancellations

The FAA attributed the flight disruptions to adverse weather conditions combined with reduced staffing levels at the air traffic control facility managing traffic for the affected airports. These constraints limited the number of aircraft that could safely arrive and depart, prompting the enforcement of delays and holds.

Travelers experienced cancellations and delays for flights both arriving to and departing from JFK, Newark, LaGuardia, and Philadelphia airports. Some outbound flights were held on the ground at their originating airports, while others faced postponed departures timed to maintain safe separation in congested airspace.
