On July 17, 2026, the Federal Aviation Administration imposed flight delays and cancellations affecting more than 500 cancelled flights and approximately 4,000 delayed arrivals into key airports in the New York area and Philadelphia.

Flight operations at John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International, and Philadelphia International airports have faced ground stops and ground delays intermittently throughout the evening.

FAA Actions and Causes

The FAA cited adverse weather conditions combined with air traffic control staffing shortages at the regional facility responsible for these airports as the reasons for the disruptions. Ground stops restrict departing flights from taking off to maintain safe traffic flow,

holding them at their origin until lifted. Ground delays allow aircraft to depart but provide adjusted takeoff times to ensure adequate spacing and prevent congestion in the airspace surrounding these airports.

Passenger Guidance and Airspace Control

Passengers with flights arriving at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, and Philadelphia International airports are experiencing disruptions due to these operational controls. Travelers can access the latest flight status details on the FlightAware website and check FAA advisories and real-time ground stops on the FAA’s official site.

The FAA’s management of air traffic flow aims to mitigate in-flight holding patterns and airspace congestion resulting from inclement weather and limited staffing,

ensuring safety while causing significant delays across these airports.
