Water levels on the Rhine and Danube rivers have reached record lows this week, impacting river cruise operations across Europe. The Rhine dropped to 53 centimetres near Frankfurt, while the Danube in Budapest fell within eight centimetres of its 2018 record low of 38 centimetres.
UK travel agents reported cancellations and itinerary adjustments over the last week by Avalon Waterways, Emerald, Scenic, and APT Travelmarvel due to these low water levels, according to trade social media pages. While most cruises are still operating as scheduled, some necessary changes have been made.
Cruise Operators Respond to Low Water Conditions

in the UK and Europe, stated that despite extreme weather conditions, most cruises are continuing as planned. He emphasized the importance of preparation, saying, “While we have had to make some adjustments to sailings where absolutely necessary, most of our cruises continue to operate as planned.” Melinis added that controlling responses to weather is critical, noting, “We can’t control the weather, but we can control how well we prepare for it and how we respond.”
Riviera Travel acknowledged that low water levels can occasionally affect river cruise operations. A company spokesperson said, “Our priority is always the safety and enjoyment
of our guests,” adding that operational teams have contingency plans and keep passengers and agents fully informed. Vicky Billing, Riviera Travel’s Director of UK and Ireland Trade and Partnerships, confirmed adjustments to excursions and hydration measures to support guest wellbeing during the heatwave.
Jamie Loizou, AmaWaterways’ Managing Director for International Markets, said no cruises have been cancelled due to water levels. The company adapts itineraries on a voyage-by-voyage basis, including port order changes, motorcoach transfers around non-navigable river sections, changes in embarkation or disembarkation points, and ship swaps using sister vessels sailing opposite rotations. Loizou highlighted that the operations team
monitors conditions constantly and acts proactively before problems arise.
Viking, which operates the largest European river cruise fleet, confirms selected itineraries may be modified due to unusually low levels on the Danube and Rhine. Its spokesperson explained that a Switzerland-based nautical team coordinates closely with local authorities and port partners to implement operational adjustments and minimize customer impact. Viking also uses ship swaps between sister vessels on similar itineraries to reduce passenger disruption.
CroisiEurope reported no cancellations and said it has managed the situation by adapting itineraries and switching ships when necessary, according to a company spokesperson.
