American Airlines announced the launch of three nonstop international routes from Philadelphia International Airport in 2027. The new flights will connect Philadelphia with Porto, Portugal beginning March 28, Vienna, Austria starting May 6, and Reykjavik, Iceland starting May 27.
Aircraft Details and Ticket Sales
Flights to Porto and Vienna will be operated using Airbus A321XLR aircraft, while the Reykjavik route will use an Airbus A321neo. Tickets for all three routes will be available for purchase starting August 31, 2026.

American Airlines is the leading carrier at Philadelphia International Airport by passenger volume, transporting over 20 million passengers in 2025. This accounts for nearly 70% of
the airport’s traffic. Frontier Airlines is the second largest carrier at Philadelphia with approximately 3 million passengers in the same year. American Airlines plans to operate 21 transatlantic routes out of Philadelphia once these new flights begin.
Route Expansion and Background
The airline has recently expanded its European service from Philadelphia, including the addition of flights to Copenhagen, Denmark; Nice, France; and Naples, Italy. It has also reinstated routes to Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czech Republic. The Reykjavik route was originally announced in 2019 but was delayed due to pandemic travel restrictions before being reactivated for 2027.
Leisure Travel Significance
Cesar Marchese, vice president of operations for
American Airlines in Philadelphia, said the airport “has a much bigger footprint when it comes to leisure summer travel” compared to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. American Airlines increased flights through Philadelphia by 10% during summer 2026 compared to the prior year, emphasizing the airport’s role as a key leisure travel gateway.
