Air Canada has initiated a biometric boarding pilot featuring four facial recognition e-gates at Toronto Pearson International Airport, according to Mobile ID World. The pilot includes one gate for domestic flights and three gates serving transborder routes to the United States.
Passengers on domestic flights can enroll via the Air Canada mobile app ahead of their departure. At the boarding gate, cameras capture live facial images which are matched against Air Canada’s identity gallery, eliminating the need to present a physical passport and boarding pass. Travelers bound for the U.S. use an existing enrollment process completed during American border preclearance
at Pearson, where biometric data is obtained in advance. This allows transborder gates to verify identities without additional registration.
Dormakaba supplies the biometric e-gates used in the pilot, while Airsphere and SITA provide the middleware connecting the gates to the identity management systems. Air Canada supplies both the domestic enrollment software and the associated identity database.
Passenger participation and pilot monitoring
The biometric boarding initiative is voluntary, with traditional document checks remaining an option for all passengers. Toronto Pearson International Airport is actively monitoring adoption rates, passenger processing times, throughput, and customer satisfaction metrics as part of the pilot’s evaluation.
This pilot builds on Air
Canada’s previous mobile-based traveler identity project that linked facial recognition to smartphone enrollment. Additionally, Calgary Airport operates a similar biometric boarding deployment using selfie-based onboarding methods.
Airport modernization and growth context
Toronto Pearson currently processes around 47 million passengers annually and expects numbers to grow to 65 million by the early 2030s. The biometric boarding trial forms part of a larger modernization program aimed at digitally transforming identity verification and automating passenger processing to accommodate this anticipated increase.
The pilot is presently limited to automating boarding procedures. Its two enrollment approaches demonstrate how integration of a mobile airline app and precollected government traveler data can
facilitate biometric identity verification at automated gates.
