The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops on November 2, 2026, at Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and a Palm Beach area airport. The measure was prompted by thunderstorms affecting South Florida, which led to restrictions on aircraft arrivals into the region to maintain safety and manage air traffic capacity.

Flight Delays at Miami and Fort Lauderdale Airports

As of a 4:17 p.m. UTC FAA operational update, Miami International Airport recorded departure delays ranging between one hour and 46 minutes to two hours. Arriving flights at Miami had airborne delays of up to 15 minutes at that time. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport experienced gate-hold and

taxi delays estimated between 31 and 45 minutes during the same period.

Nature and Purpose of FAA Ground Stops

Ground stops are temporary traffic management measures designed to prevent excessive aircraft from entering airspace or airports when operational capacity is reduced, as was the case during thunderstorm activity over South Florida. The FAA emphasized that these stops do not necessarily mean airport closures or the cancellation of all flights. Instead, they hold aircraft at their points of origin until it is safe for them to proceed.

Traveler Impacts and Connections

Passengers faced flight departure delays up to two hours at Miami and shorter airborne delays on arrivals. At Fort Lauderdale, gate-hold

and taxi delays of approximately half an hour to 45 minutes affected operations. Fort Lauderdale serves as a key hub for domestic, Caribbean, and cruise passengers connecting through Port Everglades. Travelers with cruise connections at Fort Lauderdale were advised to verify arrival and boarding times given potential knock-on disruptions caused by late flight arrivals.

Potential for Further Weather-Related Restrictions

The FAA stated that additional ground stops or ground delay programs could be implemented later in the day depending on evolving thunderstorm conditions. The agency continues to monitor weather impacts on air traffic within Miami’s air traffic control region, which includes all three affected airports.
