Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore launched biometric travel trials under the Digi Yatra program for international departures on 30 October 2026. This initiative involves select IndiGo and Air India international flights, aiming to facilitate contactless biometric verification for eligible passengers.
Biometric Verification Process at Bangalore Airport
Passengers participating in the trial must validate their identity by scanning their e-passport chip through the Digi Yatra App and completing a photo verification. Following successful validation, a privacy-preserving digital travel credential is issued, allowing easier movement through designated touchpoints within the terminal. Initial trials focus on biometric checks at terminal entry and security gates, with potential expansion to boarding
verification for select flights.
Background and Scale of Digi Yatra System
The Digi Yatra biometric system currently serves over 26.5 million domestic passengers in India. Prior to this international expansion, a technical Proof of Concept was conducted earlier in 2026 at Kempegowda International Airport in collaboration with IATA, SITA, and other industry stakeholders. This successful trial validated the system’s adaptability and reliability for passenger processing.
Official Statements and Collaborative Partners
George Fanthome, Chief Technical Officer at Bangalore International Airport Limited, emphasized the role of technology in advancing passenger experience by expanding Digi Yatra to international flights. The launch represents cooperation between government agencies, Digi Yatra, SITA, IndiGo, and Air India to create
a more digital and efficient travel process at the airport.
Although the biometric trials simplify identity verification, standard immigration and emigration procedures remain mandatory. Travelers must continue to carry physical travel documents, which are required at airline check-in counters and for statutory immigration controls, as Digi Yatra does not replace these regulatory checks.
