The luxury cruise ship MV Odyssey suspended its operations while docked at the port of Sihanoukville in Cambodia, leaving 203 passengers and 156 crew members onboard as of the suspension. The vessel, which can accommodate up to 650 passengers, began its global continuous voyage in Belfast in October 2024.

Fuel Price Increases Force Cruise Suspension

The cruise operator, Florida-based Villa Vie Odyssey, attributed the suspension to a sharp rise in fuel prices driven by the US war on Iran starting in early 2026. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz since February 28, a vital oil shipping route, pushed oil prices above $117 a barrel by

October 2026, with monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia escalating from $1,800 to as high as $8,000. These conditions rendered the ship’s operating model financially unviable.

Passengers Report Emergency Funding and Operational Limits

Passenger Randy Cassingham said he learned of the cruise cancellation through a message board on the ship, describing the situation as resulting from a series of problems including the business model and fuel crisis. Pamela Reckamp, a passenger, recounted a company meeting held in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, where officials requested $1 million in funding to continue operations, warning that without it the ship would have only about four days of

power left before lights and air conditioning shut down.

Operator Coordinates Disembarkation and Restructuring

Villa Vie Odyssey released a statement noting, “Extraordinary increases in fuel costs have placed our current operating model under unsustainable financial pressure.” The company said it is assisting passengers with disembarkation and temporary living arrangements while supporting crew and staff. It is also exploring restructuring and recapitalization options over the following 60 days.

Voyage Background and Passenger Investment

The MV Odyssey’s voyage commenced from Belfast in October 2024, designed as an uninterrupted world cruise. Passenger Carol Larson from California, who purchased a cabin for $120,000 plus monthly maintenance fees, had lived onboard for 18 months. Larson

acknowledged the venture was a startup risk but valued the experience, citing improved personal health and an option to live aboard for up to 15 years.
