The luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey suspended operations in the Cambodian port city of Sihanoukville on Tuesday, leaving approximately 200 passengers stranded. The US-based operator, Villa Vie Residences, ordered passengers to disembark by 2pm local time after notifying them at 6am about the suspension caused by soaring fuel costs.
Villa Vie Odyssey’s Voyage Details
Villa Vie Odyssey is a nearly 200-meter (656-foot) vessel with a capacity of up to 650 passengers. It departed Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024 on a continuous 3.5-year circumnavigation scheduled to visit nearly 150 countries. The ship had completed over 750 days of its global voyage before announcing the
suspension in Cambodia.
Fuel Cost Increases and Mitigation Efforts
Fuel prices surged following the start of the Iran war in early 2026, causing monthly fuel expenses per cabin in parts of Asia to spike from $1,800 to as much as $8,000. Villa Vie Residences implemented fuel-saving measures including slowing the itinerary and extending time in ports but stated these adjustments were insufficient to balance out the extraordinary cost increase. The operator explicitly noted that “passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution.”
Passenger Reactions and Disembarkation
Passengers Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin reported being informed by the company’s chief executive about the mandatory evacuation early Tuesday
morning. The couple expressed shock and disappointment, highlighting that a potential investor had conducted due diligence but ultimately did not proceed. “We were heartbroken. It felt like our dream had been crushed,” they said. Passengers were relocated to various hotels in Sihanoukville, a location noted for its distance from major international airports, while awaiting further arrangements.
Company Restructuring and Financial Outlook
Villa Vie Residences announced it will spend the next 60 days on restructuring and recapitalization, without guaranteeing a positive outcome. Prior to suspension, the company had faced costly delays and repairs that kept passengers stranded in Belfast for months and contributed significant losses.
Onboard Amenities and Pricing
During
the voyage, passengers accessed multiple bars, restaurants, a pool deck, and a pickleball court. Permanent residences on the ship were priced between $120,000 and $440,000, while cabin rentals were available for $3,500 per month.
Geopolitical Impact on Fuel Costs
The Iran war that began earlier this year triggered a global spike in fuel prices. This inflation caused the cruise’s monthly fuel cost per cabin in parts of Asia to rise dramatically, directly impacting the vessel’s operational feasibility despite management’s attempts at fuel conservation.
Passenger Adjustments Post-Suspension
Following the suspension, many passengers chose to continue their journeys overland, while others remained in Cambodia hoping for the cruise to resume.
Passengers formed support communities and shared accommodations across different Sihanoukville hotels. Holly Hennessey, a passenger, described their situation: “We’re all in different hotels… We’re just waiting.”
