Xiamen Metro inaugurated two new lines on September 16, 2026, increasing the network by 57.4 km or 37% from 98.4 km to 155.8 km.

Both lines have commenced limited passenger operations featuring free travel during the running-in phase. Service is restricted by long headways and limited hours.

These new routes employ fully automated systems using four-car B-type trains powered through 1.5 kV DC overhead electrification.

Route details and extensions for Line 4

The initial section of Line 4 spans 31.3 km and runs from Jimei Software Park North to Qianwu. Extensions are underway at both ends, including a connection to the under-construction Xiang’an International Airport.

An infill

station called Xiyan will be added. Additionally, a five-station branch line is planned to run southwest from Xiamen North main line station to Huizuo / Maluan Bay South in the medium term.

Line 4 specifications and role

Line 4 operates as an express metro with a top speed of 120 km/h. It features relatively long distances between stations to link significant transport hubs efficiently.

This design aligns with China’s increasing adoption of express metro services aimed at rapid connections between key locations.

Inter-urban Line 6 connects Xiamen and Zhangzhou

Line 6 covers 26.1 km and serves as Xiamen’s first inter-urban metro, linking Huaqiao University in Xiamen to Jiaojiang Road in Zhangzhou’s suburban

areas.

The line is jointly developed and operated by Xiamen and Zhangzhou municipalities but runs through as a single service.

Construction is ongoing for a two-station extension in Zhangzhou and an infill station named Chenjing in Xiamen.

According to Railway Gazette International, the addition of the inter-urban line and the express metro route significantly expands Xiamen’s transit capabilities and regional connectivity.
