Japanese low-cost airline ZIPAIR will begin nonstop year-round flights between Toronto Pearson Airport and Tokyo Narita International Airport in 2027, operating three times per week. This new service marks ZIPAIR’s second Canadian destination following its Vancouver-Tokyo route.
ZIPAIR Fleet, Ownership, and Current Route Network
Founded in 2018 and commencing operations in 2022, ZIPAIR is wholly owned by Japan Airlines. The airline operates Boeing 787-8 aircraft on routes spanning Asia and North America, including Seoul, Bangkok, Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, and Orlando.
Low-Cost Model, Baggage Policy, and In-Flight Services
ZIPAIR maintains low base fares by charging separately for optional services such as checked baggage and in-flight meals. Passengers are allowed two pieces of
carry-on baggage weighing up to 7 kilograms in total without additional cost. The airline provides complimentary internet access and free in-flight entertainment accessible via personal devices. Snack, beverage, and duty-free purchases are available onboard.
Fare Comparisons and Existing Airline Service
Currently, Air Canada exclusively offers nonstop flights from Toronto to Tokyo. Price comparisons indicate ZIPAIR’s Vancouver to Tokyo round-trip fares in March 2027 average about $1,052, compared to Air Canada’s approximately $1,661 for similar travel dates. ZIPAIR’s entry will increase competition and provide a more affordable nonstop option for Toronto-Tokyo travelers.
Airport Locations and Ticket Sale Updates
Toronto Pearson Airport serves as the Canadian hub for the new service, while Tokyo Narita
International Airport is located roughly 60 kilometers east of central Tokyo. ZIPAIR’s ticket sales launch date for the Toronto-Narita route has not yet been announced. Toronto Pearson Airport has encouraged travellers to monitor updates for ticket availability.
Market Context and Seasonal Pricing
ZIPAIR’s entry into the Toronto-Tokyo route aligns with Japan Airlines’ low-cost carrier strategy targeting Asia-North America markets. Flight prices on this route tend to vary seasonally, with peak fares occurring during Japan’s cherry blossom season in late March and early April.
