Foreign tourist arrivals to Albania reached 9,443,700 in the first eight months of 2026, up 5.3% compared to the same period last year, according to INSTAT data. In August alone, about 2.43 million foreign visitors entered Albania, marking a 2% increase from 2.38 million in August 2025. This 2% growth rate in August 2026 represents the slowest month-over-month increase since the pandemic.
INSTAT Reports Data and Tourism Operators Assess Sector Growth
The Albanian Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) released the tourism figures and announced the removal of previously published data on tourists’ origins, citing inconsistencies among government sources. Tourism operators characterized the 2026 visitor numbers as positive but expressed uncertainty
about the corresponding impact on tourism revenue. They expect the overall tourism growth rate for the year to align closely with that of 2025.
Shifts in Tourist Behavior Affect Accommodation and Booking Patterns
Tourists visiting Albania in 2026 are generally spending less time per visit than in previous years. There has been an increase in the use of private apartments, homes, and self-catering lodging, whereby visitors purchase groceries and prepare their own meals. Operators also noted a rise in last-minute bookings and more cautious spending habits among travelers from key European markets.
Tourism Season Extension and Confirmed Interest from European Groups
The 2026 tourism season in Albania is projected to extend through the first ten days of October
based on current bookings. Guaranteed contracts for 2027 have been secured with tourist groups from Poland, the Czech Republic, and France, signaling sustained interest in Albania as a travel destination for the upcoming year.
In 2025, Albania recorded a 6.6% increase in foreign tourist arrivals, totaling 12.47 million visitors. The country’s population was estimated at 2.4 million in 2023.
