Hyatt Chairman, President, and CEO Mark Hoplamazian spoke on September 24, 2026, at the Skift Global Forum in New York City about operational insights gained from Hyatt’s nearly 70 years of hotel ownership experience.
For 67 years, Hyatt was the largest owner of its own hotels. This extensive ownership background fostered a mindset within the company focused on understanding and managing hotels from an owner’s perspective.
Hyatt’s Break-even Occupancy Reduction During Covid Crisis
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Hyatt based the break-even occupancy level for certain larger hotels at approximately 43%. Within six months of the pandemic’s impact, the company successfully reduced this threshold to 22%, a significant
operational adjustment addressing the crisis conditions.
Operational Collaboration with Third-Party Owners
Hyatt extended its operational expertise by sharing its complete management playbook with Host Hotels, Hyatt’s largest third-party owner, to support them through the challenges posed by the pandemic and shifting market conditions.
Hoplamazian identified heightened cost and fee pressures from hotel owners on major groups as a key industry trend. He stated that Hyatt’s ownership history provides a strategic advantage in navigating these pressures by adopting an owner’s mindset, quoting, “The mindset of being an owner leads you to put yourself in the shoes of an owner, and really understand you have to eat
your own cooking every day.”
