Air Canada passengers can enroll through the airline’s mobile app to use a new facial verification biometric gate at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The pilot program includes four biometric e-gates: one serving domestic flights and three for transborder routes to the United States.
Technical and Operational Details
The physical biometric gates are supplied by Dormakaba, while middleware providers Airsphere and SITA connect the biometric equipment to identity systems. Air Canada developed the domestic enrollment software and manages the airline’s identity gallery used in the verification process. Domestic travelers must opt in through the airline’s app before reaching the gate, where a live camera image
is compared against stored identity records to potentially replace passport and boarding pass checks.
Passengers traveling to the U.S. undergo a different enrollment linked to American border preclearance at Toronto Pearson. Their biometric images captured during this preclearance are matched at the transborder biometric gates without requiring a separate registration through the Air Canada app.
Passenger Impact and Participation
Participation in the biometric boarding pilot is voluntary, and conventional document checks remain in place for all passengers. The program is designed to streamline the boarding process by reducing the need for physical document presentation at the gate. Toronto Pearson tracks adoption rates, processing times,
passenger throughput, and customer satisfaction as part of the ongoing pilot evaluation.
Context and Future Prospects
Toronto Pearson handles approximately 47 million passengers annually and projects an increase to 65 million passengers per year by the early 2030s. The biometric pilot is part of a broader modernization initiative aimed at increasing passenger processing efficiency and capacity. The pilot’s scope is currently limited to boarding operations.
Similar biometric boarding and smartphone enrollment tests have taken place at Calgary Airport, extending Air Canada’s efforts to integrate digital identity verification into airport processing. The deployment builds on the airline’s previous mobile-based traveler identity pilot, which linked smartphone
enrollment with facial recognition at the airport.
