Air Canada passengers at Toronto Pearson International Airport can now enroll through the airline’s mobile app to use a new facial verification biometric gate pilot. The pilot comprises four biometric e-gates dedicated to domestic travelers within Canada and three additional gates serving U.S. bound transborder passengers at Toronto Pearson.
Domestic passengers opting into the program use the Air Canada app to capture a live facial image that is verified against the airline’s identity gallery. Successful matches replace the need to present passports and boarding passes at the gate. For U.S.-bound travelers, the biometric gates utilize images taken during mandatory U.S.
Customs and Border Protection preclearance at Pearson, removing the need for separate advance registration.
Technology and Providers
The physical biometric gates deployed in this pilot are supplied by Dormakaba. Middleware connecting the biometric hardware to identity management systems is provided by Airsphere and SITA. Air Canada manages the enrollment software and maintains the identity database for domestic passenger verification.
The pilot at Toronto Pearson is operated in cooperation with airside authorities and builds on prior Air Canada initiatives involving mobile-based facial recognition identity tools used at other Canadian airports, including Calgary.
Passenger Experience and Operational Impact
Participation in the biometric pilot remains voluntary, with traditional document checks continuing
for all passengers. The facial verification gates aim to expedite boarding by reducing reliance on physical ID presentation. Toronto Pearson is monitoring key metrics such as adoption rates, processing times, and passenger throughput as part of the pilot assessment.
Airport Growth and Modernization Context
Toronto Pearson currently handles approximately 47 million passengers annually and expects passenger volume to increase to around 65 million by the early 2030s. The biometric pilot aligns with airport modernization efforts to integrate digital identity verification and automated processing solutions to manage anticipated growth.
While the current pilot focuses specifically on boarding procedures, it demonstrates the practical integration of airline mobile
app enrollment and governmental travel records enabling automated identity verification through biometric gates.
