Royal Caribbean Group canceled a seven-night Alaska voyage aboard Serenade of the Seas scheduled for August 30, 2026, after technical problems left the ship stranded in Vancouver, British Columbia. The original departure was delayed to September 1, 2026, and then the cruise was fully canceled on the same day, impacting approximately 1,700 passengers.
Mechanical Issues and Prior Technical Problems Led to Cancellation
The cancellation was driven by ongoing mechanical issues and technical difficulties with the Serenade of the Seas, which could not be resolved before the rescheduled September 1 sailing. The vessel had a history of engine and technical problems during June and July 2025 voyages. Due to these
maintenance challenges, Royal Caribbean determined that the ship could not safely operate the cruise as planned.
Vancouver Terminals Used During Repair Period
The Serenade of the Seas was initially docked at Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise terminal during the delay and later moved to the Lynnterm terminal while undergoing repairs. Alex Munro, spokesperson for the Port of Vancouver, confirmed the vessel was temporarily moored at Lynnterm for the maintenance work. The canceled voyage was scheduled to include Alaska ports of call such as Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert.
Passenger Compensation and Disruptions During Delay
Passengers affected by the cancellation were provided full refunds, future cruise credits equal to 100% of the fare,
retention of onboard credits, and reimbursement of eligible flight-change fees. Travelers faced itinerary changes and were restricted to the docked ship’s terminals with limited amenities available during the delay. Multiple passengers reported frustrations over the situation, citing restricted ship services and disruptions to planned vacations. Some passengers canceled their bookings after initial trip shortening announcements.
A Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson said, “To accommodate ongoing maintenance, we’ve had to cancel our sailing. We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and have worked with them to adjust their travel plans.” The company confirmed repairs were completed ahead of the vessel’s next
scheduled sailing on September 6, 2026. Munro added, “The Serenade of the Seas experienced a technical issue and is temporarily docked at Lynnterm terminal while it undergoes repairs.”
