Royal Caribbean Group cancelled a seven-night Alaska cruise aboard the Serenade of the Seas following technical difficulties that left the vessel stranded in Vancouver, British Columbia. The original itinerary, scheduled to depart on August 30, 2026, was to visit Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Prince Rupert. Initial delays pushed the departure to September 1, shortening the trip to five days before the full cancellation was announced on September 1.
Passenger Impact and Locations Involved
The cancellation affected approximately 1,700 passengers who had planned to embark from Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise terminal. After the initial delay, the ship was moved to Lynnterm terminal for repairs. Travelers faced
disrupted vacation plans, many having to arrange alternate transportation and accommodations. The Serenade of the Seas, a 961-foot vessel with a capacity of 2,143 passengers, was tied up at Lynnterm station during repair efforts.
Compensation and Official Statements
Royal Caribbean offered affected passengers full refunds, future cruise credits equal to 100% of their fare, retention of onboard credits, and reimbursement for eligible flight change fees. A company spokesperson said, “To accommodate ongoing maintenance, we’ve had to cancel our sailing. We apologize to our guests for the inconvenience and have worked with them to adjust their travel plans.” Repairs were completed in time for the
next sailing on September 6. Port of Vancouver spokesperson Alex Munro confirmed the vessel was temporarily docked at the Lynnterm terminal for the repairs.
Passenger Experiences and Background
Passengers expressed frustration about the disruption and limited amenities during the ship’s time in port. One passenger described the experience as “an immense disappointment” and cited the cruise as a birthday celebration that became a “disaster and disappointment from start to finish.” Another noted that only a few bars were open aboard the ship, with shops and casinos closed, limiting the use of onboard credits. Some travelers canceled their bookings before boarding after the initial delays,
with a reported passenger still awaiting a fare refund.
The Serenade of the Seas had prior technical difficulties in 2025, including engine problems during July and other issues in June while sailing from Vancouver. These ongoing maintenance challenges contributed to the 2026 cancellation.
