American Airlines suffered an information-technology outage in July 2024 that triggered a nationwide ground stop, delaying about 30% of its flights and canceling over 200. Similarly, Delta Air Lines experienced a July 2024 outage that caused over 7,000 cancellations and tens of thousands of delays through five days.
Chicago O’Hare, Atlanta, New York Area Airports Heavily Impacted
Widely used hubs remained vulnerable to disruption. Chicago O’Hare faced severe storm conditions in June resulting in over 200 cancellations and more than 1,200 delays due to a ground stop. Atlanta and New York area airports, including JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia, have also recorded hundreds of delays and dozens
of cancellations in recent weeks. Boston’s Logan International encountered hundreds of delays and multiple cancellations following heavy rainfall on a single day.
