Rail travellers in the UK face significant disruptions during the August 2026 bank holiday weekend from 28 to 31 August due to planned engineering works and strike action affecting major routes, including the East Coast Main Line and East Midlands Railway.

Detailed Engineering Works on East Coast Main Line and HS2 Routes

On Sunday 30 August, there will be no train services between Peterborough and London King’s Cross as Network Rail installs new ‘in-train’ signalling technology along the East Coast Main Line. This upgrade aims to reduce delays and cancellations caused by signal failures. Additionally, HS2-related engineering will close the line between Birmingham New Street and Coleshill Parkway throughout the bank

holiday weekend. Replacement bus services will operate between Wolverhampton, Stafford, and Stoke-on-Trent to accommodate affected passengers. Overhead power supply improvement work will also cause a full suspension of train services between Stafford and Wolverhampton on 30 August, with replacement buses provided.

Operators’ Timetable Changes and Strike Impact on Services

East Midlands Railway (EMR) will run a significantly reduced timetable on Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August due to strike action by the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT). EMR advises passengers to limit travel on these dates to essential journeys only and warns that services between Sheffield, Nottingham, and London King’s Cross will be extremely busy, with standing

room likely. CrossCountry services affected by HS2 engineering works have urged passengers to allow extra time for journeys and avoid bringing large luggage items, as trolleys are not permitted on board.

Rail Replacement Bus Services Across Multiple Routes

Engineering and repair work have led to several rail replacement bus services during the bank holiday weekend. Buses will replace trains between Wrexham and Bidston from 16 to 30 August and between Wrexham and Shrewsbury until 30 August due to bridge repairs and drainage upgrades. Between Leeds, York, and Selby, all train services will be replaced by buses throughout the bank holiday weekend as Transpennine operator carries out upgrade

work. No trains will operate between Dumfries and Barrhead and between Kilmarnock and Ayr from 29 August to 14 September due to ongoing track improvements.

Traffic Volumes and Road Congestion Forecast for Bank Holiday Weekend

The AA projects that Friday 28 August will be the busiest road travel day of the weekend, with approximately 23.5 million journeys expected. The following days will see similarly high travel volumes, with 22.9 million on Saturday, 21.7 million on Sunday, and 21.6 million on Monday. Most journeys are forecast to be shorter than 50 miles, placing heavy demand on local roads near leisure and shopping destinations, as well as on traditional holiday routes including

the east coast resorts, the South West routes via the A303, M5, and A38, the M4 corridor toward Wales, and the M6 towards Blackpool and North West coastal areas.

Network Rail and HS2 director Patrick Cawley acknowledged the ongoing infrastructure works, saying, “We’d like to thank passengers for their patience while this work takes place and encourage everyone travelling over the bank holiday weekend to check before they travel.”
