American Airlines will introduce three new international routes from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in 2027, connecting passengers directly to Porto, Portugal; Vienna, Austria; and Reykjavik, Iceland.
Flights to Porto will commence on March 28, 2027, with service to Vienna starting on May 6, and flights to Reykjavik launching on May 27 of the same year.
Aircraft and Ticket Availability
The routes to Porto and Vienna will be operated using Airbus A321XLR aircraft, while the Reykjavik service will use the Airbus A321neo. Tickets for all three new routes will go on sale beginning August 31, 2026.
American Airlines’ Philadelphia Market Share and Growth
American Airlines carried more than 20 million passengers through
Philadelphia International Airport in 2025, representing nearly 70% of the airport’s total passenger volume. Frontier Airlines was the second largest carrier at PHL, with about 3 million passengers in 2025. The airline increased its flight operations through Philadelphia by 10% during the summer of 2026 compared to the previous year.
Recent Route Expansions and Leisure Travel Focus
In addition to the new city launches, American Airlines has recently added flights to Copenhagen, Nice, and Naples from Philadelphia. It has also resumed service to Budapest and Prague. Cesar Marchese, vice president of operations for American Airlines in Philadelphia, noted that Philadelphia “has a much bigger footprint when it
comes to leisure summer travel” compared to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
With these additions, American Airlines will operate 21 transatlantic routes from Philadelphia International Airport, providing travelers with more nonstop options to European destinations and improving convenience by reducing the need for connecting flights.
