American Airlines will inaugurate three new international routes from Philadelphia International Airport in 2027. Service to Porto, Portugal, will begin on March 28, Vienna, Austria, on May 6, and Reykjavik, Iceland, on May 27. Flights to Porto and Vienna will use Airbus A321XLR aircraft, while the Reykjavik route will operate with an Airbus A321neo.

In 2025, American Airlines carried over 20 million passengers through Philadelphia International Airport, accounting for nearly 70% of the airport’s total traffic. Frontier Airlines ranks second, transporting approximately 3 million passengers that year. The summer 2026 flight schedule through Philadelphia reflects a 10% increase over summer
2025 for American Airlines.
Recent Route Expansions and the Reykjavik Service Delay
Recent additions by American Airlines from Philadelphia include flights to Copenhagen, Denmark; Nice, France; Naples, Italy; and reinstated routes to Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czech Republic. The Reykjavik route was initially announced in 2019 but was postponed due to pandemic travel restrictions. The Porto route required government approval before the March 2027 launch.
Leisure Travel Focus and Ticket Availability
Cesar Marchese, vice president of operations for American Airlines in Philadelphia, stated that Philadelphia has a significantly larger role in leisure summer travel compared to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, which balances both business and leisure travelers. Tickets for the
new Philadelphia routes to Porto, Vienna, and Reykjavik will be available starting August 31, 2026. Once operational, these routes will bring American Airlines’ total transatlantic offerings from Philadelphia to 21.
