American Airlines will introduce three new international routes from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in 2027. Flights to Porto, Portugal, will begin on March 28, followed by service to Vienna, Austria, starting May 6. The Icelandic capital Reykjavik, a route delayed by the pandemic after an initial 2019 announcement, will launch May 27.
American Airlines will operate flights to Porto and Vienna using Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The Reykjavik route will use an Airbus A321neo. Tickets for these routes will be available for purchase starting August 31, 2026. When these services commence, American will maintain 21 transatlantic routes out of Philadelphia.

Airlines is the largest airline at Philadelphia International Airport, carrying over 20 million passengers through PHL last year. This accounts for nearly 70% of the airport’s total passenger traffic. Frontier Airlines ranks second in passenger volume at Philadelphia, moving roughly 3 million travelers in 2025. American increased its summer flight operations at Philadelphia by 10% compared with the previous year.
The new routes add to recent transatlantic expansions American has made from Philadelphia. The airline recently introduced flights to Copenhagen, Denmark; Nice, France; and Naples, Italy. It also reinstated routes to Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czech Republic. The Reykjavik route
was initially set to launch in 2019 but was postponed due to pandemic-related travel restrictions.
Cesar Marchese, Vice President of Operations for American Airlines in Philadelphia, noted that Philadelphia has “a much bigger footprint when it comes to leisure summer travel” compared to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, which serves both business and leisure transatlantic travelers.
