or 18% of flights for the morning of August 27, 2026. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) reported 19 cancellations and 48 delays during the same morning, despite no ground stop being implemented there.

According to FlightAware data at 9:45 a.m. EDT on August 27, the U.S. national airspace system recorded 1,522 total flight delays and 172 cancellations amid the ongoing storm system. The severe weather at New York area airports contributed to extensive disruptions. In response, multiple major airlines operating in the New York region issued flexible travel waivers for passengers flying on August 27, 2026, allowing changes or

rebookings without fees or fare differences.

Travelers at Newark face significant wait times due to the ground stop and ensuing delays, while LaGuardia arrivals have experienced over 90 minutes delay on average.
