United Airlines will introduce more than a dozen new international routes beginning spring 2027, marking the largest expansion of its international network to date. The airline will deploy updated Airbus A321XLR aircraft on multiple flights to reach smaller markets on both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific, with tickets for initial services going on sale on August 27, 2026.
New Nonstop Routes from U.S. Hubs to Europe and Asia
The expansion includes new nonstop flights from United hubs at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Denver International Airport (DEN), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). From Newark, United will serve Ljubljana,
Luxembourg, Valencia, Ibiza, Marseille, Toulouse, Olbia, Catania, and Palermo. Denver will add nonstop service to Paris-Charles de Gaulle starting May 27, 2027. Washington Dulles will launch new flights to Toulouse and Milan, along with the debut of Airbus A321XLR international service from that airport on December 1, 2026, with Amsterdam and Dublin routes. In Asia, nonstop flights from San Francisco to Okinawa and Los Angeles to Osaka will commence on March 27, 2027.
Aircraft and Cabin Features Including Use of Boeing 767-300ER on Italian Routes
United’s Airbus A321XLR aircraft are configured with lie-flat United Polaris suites featuring privacy doors, Economy Plus seating, and blocked middle seats in the economy cabin. The airline
will also operate Boeing 767-300ER aircraft configured with 46 United Polaris business class seats on Italian routes to Olbia and Catania, starting May 27 and 28, 2027, respectively. Seasonal service from Newark to Terceira in the Azores will run from June through early September 2027, using Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft without lie-flat seats.
Strategic Growth Driven by Traveler Demand and Industry Leadership
Patrick Quayle, United’s Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, described the expansion as the result of “looking ahead to where people want to go and having the confidence to lead the industry,” achieved through “a mix of science, art, and a lot of
creativity.” He emphasized United’s scale, noting the airline offers more international destinations than any other U.S. carrier. The addition of Toulouse from Washington Dulles aligns with Airbus’ North American headquarters near the airport, anticipating business travel demand from the aircraft manufacturer’s employees.
Expanded Nonstop Options and Enhanced Passenger Experience Starting in 2027
Travelers will see more nonstop U.S. international flights to underserved destinations, including United’s first nonstop service from North America to Okinawa, a more than ten-hour flight from San Francisco. Service to Tel Aviv from San Francisco, which has been intermittent since 2023, also will resume in late March 2027. The updated cabins on Airbus A321XLR routes will provide
enhanced comfort with lie-flat Polaris suites and preferred Economy Plus seating. Newark will serve as the primary hub for new European routes, while Denver adds a new nonstop to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, and Washington Dulles expands with Milan and Toulouse flights.
