The Federal Aviation Administration enforced a ground stop at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Wednesday, August 27, 2026, preventing flights destined for North Texas from taking off until further notice.
American Airlines, which operates its central hub at DFW, experienced departure delays averaging 15 minutes that increased as thunderstorms moved through the Dallas-Fort Worth area. At the same time, Dallas Love Field, the home base for Southwest Airlines, reported similar departure delays averaging 15 minutes and lengthening.
Weather and FAA Air Traffic Control Measures
The ground stop was instituted as stormy weather approached North Texas. The FAA uses such measures to manage airport traffic safely
amid hazardous weather conditions, temporarily halting aircraft departures to ensure safety and reduce congestion on approach paths.
Resumption of Operations
The FAA lifted the ground stop Wednesday evening, leading to a gradual recovery of flight operations at DFW International Airport. Departure delays at both DFW and Dallas Love Field began to ease as storm activity diminished.
