A power cut at CrossCountry’s rail control centre in Birmingham on August 22, 2026, triggered widespread cancellations and disruptions across the UK rail network on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
CrossCountry Service Interruptions Across UK Routes
Almost all CrossCountry train routes experienced significant cancellations or severe reductions in service on August 23. Affected routes included Glasgow to Penzance, Leeds to Manchester, Glasgow to Edinburgh, Manchester to Birmingham, Cheltenham to Cardiff, and Newcastle to Edinburgh. However, the route between Peterborough, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport operated near-normal services due to unrelated planned engineering works, according to CrossCountry.
Operator Responses, Ticket Validity, and Compensation
Chiltern Railways responded by adding services between Birmingham Moor Street and Oxford
and accepted all CrossCountry tickets via reasonable alternative routes to assist stranded passengers. London North Eastern Railway also honoured CrossCountry tickets to aid travellers in reaching their destinations. CrossCountry advised passengers to verify journey details through National Rail Enquiries before traveling.
Tickets dated for August 23, 2026, remain valid on other operators’ services along the same routes and on CrossCountry trains until August 26, 2026. Passengers delayed by 30 minutes or more are eligible to claim Delay Repay compensation. Those choosing not to travel can request a full refund.
Official Statements on Disruption
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed concern over the power outage’s impact
on services. She stated, “I am concerned to hear about a power outage affecting CrossCountry rail services today, which I know will be very frustrating to passengers.” She added she had requested publicly owned rail operators to provide extra services where possible. Network Rail power teams were deployed onsite in Birmingham to restore power and essential railway management systems urgently.
A CrossCountry spokesman apologised, saying, “We are sorry to passengers affected by this significant and unforeseen disruption.” The company confirmed ongoing collaboration with partners to update passengers throughout the recovery process.
Passenger Advice and Support Measures
Passengers impacted by cancellations and delays were urged to
check journey updates on National Rail Enquiries prior to travel. Chiltern Railways and London North Eastern Railway provided ticket acceptance and additional services to facilitate traveller movement during the outage. CrossCountry emphasised the availability of ticket flexibility and compensation options for affected customers navigating the disruption.
