On August 22, 2026, the City of Winnipeg activated a new railroad crossing information system featuring roadside “TRAINFO” beacons and digital message boards designed to provide advance warnings at train crossings. The message boards flash in advance of rail crossings to inform drivers.
Digital message boards have been installed specifically on Sterling Lyon Boulevard and Kenaston Boulevard. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews can access real-time crossing status information directly from their vehicle dashboards.
The flashing message boards help drivers decide whether to wait for an approaching train or seek an alternate route, aiming to reduce delays and enhance safety at
busy rail intersections. This system is part of broader improvements in rail crossing safety led by Canadian rail authorities.
