The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has enacted ground stops at nine airports across the Northeast United States on August 18, 2026, in response to incoming severe thunderstorms forecasted to bring damaging wind gusts from the afternoon through the evening.
Delta Issues Warnings and Rebooking Offers Across Northeast Airports
Delta Air Lines announced flight warnings and extended rebooking options for affected passengers at the nine Northeast U.S. airports impacted by the FAA’s ground stop order. Travelers booked on Delta flights scheduled for August 6 and 7, 2026, may rebook within the same cabin and destination without change fees if ticket reissues are completed by August 10, 2026. The airline noted
that fares differences may apply if the original booking class is not maintained.
Flight Cancellations at LaGuardia and Newark Rise Amid Delays
LaGuardia Airport in New York posted the highest flight cancellations in the U.S. on the morning of August 18, 2026, with 43 flights cancelled. Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey recorded 27 cancellations. These cancellations contributed to widespread disruptions as air traffic control (ATC) delays and staffing issues stretched flight schedules.
Passenger Reports Cite Air Traffic and Staffing Challenges
Delta customers reported significant delays at LaGuardia amid ATC constraints and pilot shortages. One passenger cited a delay exceeding two hours on a flight from Indianapolis to LaGuardia. Another noted a delay of Delta Flight
DL2396 due to only one pilot being available, underscoring staffing-related operational hurdles.
Weather, Staffing and ATC Limit Operations in Northeast
The FAA’s ground stops respond to forecasts of severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds expected to affect the Northeast. Compounding weather impacts are longstanding air traffic control delays and pilot staffing shortages that hinder recovery and amplify disruptions. Delta’s extensive hub operations in New York and Boston heighten its exposure to these combined factors.
Ongoing Delays and Delta’s Customer Service Response
Flight delays and cancellations will likely continue as severe weather progresses through August 18, 2026. Delta prepares a cancellation package anticipating significant ATC delays in the New York City area for the rest of
the day. The airline is waiving rebooking fees for relevant flights to relieve strain on passengers navigating the disruptions. Other carriers, including JetBlue, are also expected to experience delays due to their Northeast hub operations.
